Oliveira Loses Belt, Makhachev Earns Lightweight Title

In a thrilling main event at UFC 280, Islam Makhachev defeated Charles Oliveira via submission (arm-triangle choke) in the second round. Makhachev, who was a heavy favorite heading into the fight, controlled Oliveira on the ground for much of the first round before securing the finish early in the second. With the victory, Makhachev becomes the new UFC lightweight champion, while Oliveira has now lost his belt for the first time.

In other UFC 280 action, Israel Adesanya retained his UFC middleweight championship with a unanimous decision victory over Robert Whittaker. Adesanya, who was making his second defense of the title, fought a cautious fight and was able to avoid Whittaker's power shots. In the co-main event, Alexander Volkanovski won a trilogy bout over Max Holloway via unanimous decision to retain his UFC featherweight championship.
