Cash Crisis: SpiceJet Puts 150 Cabin Crew on Furlough for 3 Months

20% of the total cabin crew strength sent on leave without pay

The airline has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic and the recent travel restrictions

SpiceJet has put 150 cabin crew members on a three-month furlough, effective from April 1, 2023. This represents 20% of the airline's total cabin crew strength.

The move comes as the airline grapples with a cash crunch and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has led to a sharp decline in air travel. SpiceJet has been struggling to stay afloat in recent months and has been forced to cut costs in order to survive.

In a statement, SpiceJet said that the decision to furlough cabin crew members was "difficult" but "necessary" to ensure the long-term viability of the airline. The airline said that it will continue to monitor the situation and will recall cabin crew members as soon as the situation improves.

The furloughed cabin crew members will not be paid during their time off, but they will continue to receive medical and life insurance benefits. SpiceJet said that it will provide financial assistance to the affected crew members, if possible.

The furlough of cabin crew members is the latest in a series of cost-cutting measures that SpiceJet has implemented in recent months. The airline has also cut salaries, reduced flying hours, and laid off staff.

The airline industry has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. Travel restrictions and border closures have led to a sharp decline in air travel, which has in turn led to financial losses for airlines. SpiceJet is not the only airline that has been forced to cut costs in order to survive.
